Abstract
A brief history of recent important changes that occurred in
the parallel computing field is given. Topics discussed
include: parallel computing historical setting prior to the 1990s,
the parallel computing crises of the late 1980s,
the shift to commodity computing in the 1990s,
and the current widespread adoption and commercialization
of parallel computing. Some comments about
current research ongoing in computer science at
UTEP are given.
